Ecuador Guayaquil West Mission: UPDATE -- SORRY IT'S BEEN SO LONG! MAS INFO -- DISCULPEN POR LA TARDANZA!

I can't believe it's been over two weeks since I last posted. The time is going by so quickly! Since I last wrote, we attended our last two-day mission president seminar in Lima and were able to see some of our returned missionaries that Friday evening, Apr. 29. The following week we had our mission leadership council, the next day we took 41 missionaries to sort clothing donations at a military base in Portoviejo and had those who hadn't yet get their belongings from their apartments (some from both Manta and Portoviejo had already gotten them the week before), and then the next two days we inspected all the missionary apartments and surrounding neighborhoods in Manta, Portoviejo, Bahia, and Chone to determine if it was safe to begin sending missionaries back to those areas. We also sent missionaries to Manta to retrieve the rest of the personal belongings of the missionaries who were serving there and we retrieved the belongings of the missionaries who were in Chone.

No puedo creer que ya ha pasado dos semanas desde la última vez que escribí aquí. Está volando el tiempo!! Desde la última vez, asistimos nuestro último seminario de presidentes de misión en Lima donde pudimos ver algunos de nuestros misioneros retornados la noche del 29 de abril. La siguiente semana, tuvimos nuestro consejo de líderes y el próximo día llevamos a 41 misioneros a dividir donaciones de ropa en una instalación militar en Portoviejo y pudieron algunos de los misioneros sacar sus cosas personales de sus apartamentos el mismo día (algunos de Manta y Portoviejo ya habían sacado sus cosas la semana antes). Los siguientes dos días revisamos los departamentos de los misioneros y los áreas alrededor en Manta, Portoviejo, Bahia, y Chone para determinar si todo estaba bien para mandar a los misioneros de regreso a sus sectores. También mandamos misioneros a Manta para recoger las cosas de los misioneros que habían estado sirviendo en Manta y nosotros recogimos las cosas de los élderes que estaban en Chone.

All of the missionary apartments and the buildings they are in are structurally fine, with just minor cracks in the walls for the most part. Several of the areas have quite a bit of damage so a few of the missionaries will have to wait a little while longer to return. There have not been any additional aftershocks large enough to register for the past two weeks. The areas where most of the destruction took place have been blocked off and many of the buildings that fell have been removed already. When we drove through Portoviejo and Manta, you wouldn't know there had been a major earthquake if you weren't in the areas affected. Life has gone back to normal in many areas. So on May 10, Pres. Dennis began sending missionaries back to Portoviejo and Manta – only elders right now but the sisters will probably begin going back in the next week, although there is one area each in both cities where they will not be able to return yet.

Todos los departamentos de los misioneros y los edificios están bien, con solamente daños menores. Algunas de las áreas tienen bastante daño, asi es que algunos misioneros tendrán que esperar todavía más tiempo antes de regresar para que no haya peligro. No se ha registrado réplicas grandes por mas de dos semanas. Las áreas donde la mayoría de la destrucción ocurrió están bloqueados y muchos edificios que cayeron ya los han quitado. Cuando manejamos por Portoviejo y Manta, no sabrían que hubo un terremoto grande si no estuvieran en las áreas afectadas. La vida ha vuelta a la normalidad en muchas áreas. Por eso, el 10 de mayo, Pres. Dennis empezó a mandar de regreso algunos élderes a Portoviejo y Manta – solamente élderes, pero las hermanas probablemente regresarán dentro de la próxima semana, aunque hay un área en cada ciudad donde no podrán regresar todavía.

Most of the missionaries are doing great. We had two psychologists here from LDS Family Services in Utah and Idaho who came to help members affected by the quake, but who traveled to Guayaquil last Monday to talk with some of our missionaries. Most of our missionaries reported they are fine now, so they only spoke with six or seven that day. We have very strong missionaries and most of them don’t have any lingering effects. Those that still do have seen those effects lessen, which they will continue to do over time. We are so grateful to the Lord for his tender mercies in protecting our missionaries both physically and emotionally.

La mayoría de los misioneros están muy bien. Llegaron dos psicólogos el lunes para ayudar a los miembros afectados en el norte y vinieron a Guayaquil a ver algunos de nuestros misioneros. La mayoría reportan que están bien ahora, así es que solamente hablaron con seis o siete ese dia. Tenemos misioneros fuertes y la mayoría no tienen efectos que han seguido y los que tienen han visto que se han sido menos con el tiempo. Estamos tan agradecidos al Señor por sus tiernas misericordias en proteger a nuestros misioneros tanto físicamente como emocionalmente.

Below are some pictures of our returned missionaries who came to see us in Lima, pictures of the service day we had in Portoviejo (there were also young single adults from one of the wards helping that day), pictures of the damage in Manta, Portoviejo, and Bahia, the chapel in Bahia which is being used as a hospital, and a few pictures of Chone which wasn’t greatly affected. We did not go to Pedernales because we already knew the elders’ apartment collapsed and we won’t be sending anyone back in the foreseeable future.

No fuimos a Pedernales porque ya sabíamos que se cayó el departamento de los élderes y no vamos a mandar misioneros allí por algún tiempo.
