Apology and Pedernales

I just want to apologize to our mission parents that I haven't had time to get the blog up to date yet with all the zone pictures, nor have I been able to get the letters out to you of your missionaries with the pictures we took of them yet.  We have been so busy that it feels like we've been here three months instead of three weeks!  But it's a very good busy and we're very happy.  We are finishing with Zone Conferences this week and by the end of the week, Pres. Dennis will have interviewed all 132 missionaries, some of them more than once.

Quiero disculparme a nuestros padres de misión porque no he tenido tiempo para poner al día este "blog" con todas las fotos de las zonas, ni he podido mandar todavía las cartas con fotos que tomamos con sus misioneros.  Hemos estado tan ocupados que parece que hemos estado aquí tres meses en vez de tres semanas!  Pero es bueno y estamos muy contentos.  Esta semana terminaremos con las Conferencias de Zona y para el fin de esta semana, Pte. Dennis ya habrá entrevistado a cada uno de los misioneros, algunos mas de una vez.

We had the awesome experience yesterday (Sunday) of attending the Pedernales Branch in the farthest northern point of our mission--six hours north of Guayaquil and just a few miles north of the equator.  They started with 11 members just one and a half years ago and now they have 140 attending.  They still meet in a rented house but soon should be able to be approved to have a chapel.  It was wonderful to be with them and with our four elders who serve there so far away from us and who are doing an amazing job.

Tuvimos la gran experiencia ayer (domingo) de asistir a la rama Pedernales que está en el rincón mas lejos al norte de nuestra misión--seis horas al norte de Guayaquil y unas cuantas millas de la Linea Equinoccial (la mitad del mundo).  Empezaron con solamente 11 miembros hace año y medio y ahora tienen alrededor de 140 miembros.  Todavía se reunen en un edificio rentado pero pronto deben poder ser aprobados para tener una capilla.  Fue muy lindo estar con ellos y con nuestros cuatro élderes quienes sirven allí tan lejos de nosotros y quienes están haciendo un trabajo maravilloso.

Zona Libertad

On Monday, July 1, Pres. Dennis went to the office for the first time and had planning meetings with the assistants and secretaries (the office elders).  Then on Tuesday, we headed to La Libertad for our first "Meet the President" meeting with the zone there, eight elders and six sisters. All three of us spoke that day and Sarah's talk was wonderful. The elders and sisters in that zone serve in Salinas, Santa Elena, La Libertad, and Playas. It was so wonderful to meet our first group of missionaries!!  It was also wonderful to sing our mission hymn for the first time.  We brought 250 laminated copies with us to Guayaquil to give out to the missionaries.  We also brought our mission flag with our mission motto.

El lunes, Pte. Dennis fue a la oficina por primera vez y tuvo reuniones con los asistentes y los secretarios (los elderes de oficina).  El martes fuimos a La Libertad para llevar a cabo el primer reunión de "Conocer al Presidente".  Los tres discursamos ese día.  Los elderes y las hermanas en esa zona sirven en Salinas, Santa Elena, La Libertad, y Playas.  Fue maravilloso conocer el primer grupo de nuestros misioneros!!  También fue tan bonito poder cantar nuestro himno de la misión por primera vez.  Trajimos 250 copias laminadas con nosotros a la misión para poder dar a los misioneros.  También trajimos la bandera de la misión con nuestra lema de la misión escrita en ella.

Our First Two Days in Guayaquil

This blog is dedicated to the missionaries and families of the new Ecuador Guayaquil West Mission.  I am Sis. Anette Dennis, wife of President Jorge Dennis, first president of the newly created mission. Our daughter, Sarah, is with us as well.  I will try to keep up this blog somewhat regularly:) so that the families of our missionaries can see some of the things that are happening in our mission.

Este blog está dedicado a los misioneros y sus familias de la nueva Misión Ecuador Guayaquil Oeste.  Soy Hna. Anette Dennis, esposa del Pte. Jorge Dennis, primer presidente de esta nueva misión.  Nuestra hija, Sarah, está con nosotros también. Trataré de añadir información con regularidad para que las familias de nuestros misioneros puedan estar enterados de algunas de las cosas que esten pasando en nuestra misión.

We arrived Saturday afternoon, June 29, 2013 in Guayaquil, Ecuador.  We were met by Pres. and Sis. Amaya of the Guayaquil North Mission, and by my husband's two new assistants, Elder Rodriguez from Colombia (on the right, sent from the North mission) and Elder Rodriguez from Colombia (on the left, sent from the South mission).  It's easy to remember their names and where they are from! Neither mission president knew who the other was sending to be an assistant so it wasn't planned.  They have been great assistants!  (From now on, I won't be mentioning names for security reasons, but I had to tell the story of our two Elder Rodriguezes!)

Llegamos el día sábado, 29 de junio, por la tarde a Guayaquil, Ecuador.  Llegó a recogernos el Pte. Amaya y su esposa, de la Misión Guayaquil Norte.  También con ellos llegaron los nuevos asistentes de mi esposo--Elder Rodríguez de Colombia, asignado por la misión Norte (por la derecha en la foto), y Elder Rodríguez de Colombia, asignado por la misión Sur (por la izquierda en la foto).  Es muy fácil recordar sus nombres y de donde son!  Ni el presidente de la misión Norte, ni el presidente de la misión Sur sabían a quien iba a mandar el otro, así es que no fue planeado tener dos Elderes Rodríguez como nuestros asistentes. Pero ellos son magníficos asistentes!!  (De ahora en adelante, por razones de seguridad, no mencionaré nombres.  Pero tuve que contar la historia de los dos Elderes Rodríguez!)

Afterwards they took us to eat lunch and then took us to the mission office to see where it was and to meet the four office elders.  All four of them have been fantastic.  We thought we were going to need an office couple, but not so.  These six elders are super efficient and have taken care of everything we've needed, even when most of the time we haven't even known what we've needed.  They have known and have done it.  We are so blessed to have them!

Después nos llevaron a comer y entonces nos llevaron a la oficina de la misión para verla y para conocer a los cuatro elderes de oficina.  Todos han sido fantásticos!  Habíamos pensado que íbamos a necesitar una pareja mayor para trabajar en la oficina, pero no hace falta.  Estos seis elderes son super eficientes y llevan a cabo todo lo que hemos necesitado, aún cuando no sabíamos que es lo que necesitábamos.  Ellos sí han sabido y lo han hecho.  Son una bendición para nosotros!

 Afterwards the Amaya's took us to the mission home. We took the scenic route to get there (or in other words, we got lost, as we have done so many times since:).  The Amaya's were very gracious and answered many questions that we had.  We loved getting to know them.

Después Pte. y Hna. Amaya nos llevaron a la casa de misión.  Nos llevaron por una ruta muy larga (o en otras palabras, nos perdemos como lo hemos hecho muchas veces desde entonces:)  Los Hnos. Amaya fueron muy amables y contestaron muchas preguntas que teníamos.  Nos gustó mucho poder llegar a conocerlos.

The next day we went went to church and then went to pick up the assistants at the temple so we could plan our "Meet the President" meetings for the following week with all 132 missionaries.  Then later Pres. Montalti (from Guayaquil South mission) and his family came to visit and say good-bye as they were leaving to go back home to Venezuela.  He and his wife gave us some very good advice and suggestions.  It was so good to meet their family.  They are wonderful people!

El próximo día fuimos a la capilla y después fuimos al temple a recoger a los asistentes para reunir y planear las reuniones de "Conocer el Presidente" para la próxima semana con los 132 misioneros de nuestra misión.  Mas tarde, Pte. Montalti y su familia (de la misión Guayaquil Sur) llegaron a visitarnos y despedirse porque iban a regresar a su país de Venezuela.  El presidente y su esposa nos dieron muy buenos consejos y sugerencias.  Fue un placer conocer a su familia. Son maravillosos!
